Here's what you need to know about nebulizing diffusers.

What is a nebulizer?
A nebulizer is a device that atomizes essential oil into micro fine droplets which are then sprayed into the atmosphere. This action atomizes and ionizes all molecules of the essential oil. You get maximum therapeutic benefits and maximum fragrance. No other type of diffuser can do this!

Can I diffuse anything in a nebulizer?
No you cannot. Use only pure essential oils and never use oils that have been mixed with vegetable oils or jojoba. Also, the oils should be reasonably thin - more like water than syrup.

How much oil does it use?
About 3 milliliters of oil per hour. That's more oil than other diffusers and exactly why nebulizers are so therapeutic. They saturate the air with essential oil vapor to provide a strong therapeutic effect. Watch out if somebody tries to sell you a nebulizer that "hardly uses any oil." It won't provide the therapy or the fragrance you expect.

How are nebulizers better?
Three reasons. First, the microscopic droplets produced by the nebulizer stay suspended in the air for long periods of time and maximize the fragrancing effect of your oils. Second, when inhaled, these very small droplets are considered the optimum size for deep therapeutic action as they enter the bloodstream through the lungs. Finally, the glass baffles act as vortex generators and ionize the oil vapor as it leaves the nebulizer. Many practitioners believe this ionic charge on the oil molecules is an important part of the therapeutic process.

Is there a lot of maintenance involved?
Not really. It takes less than a minute to clean a nebulizer or change oils. Just remove the nebulizer glass from the pump, return any unused oil to its original bottle and rinse the glass with common rubbing alcohol. Don't leave unused oil in the glass nebulizer for more than a few days as it will thicken

and could clog the diffuser. But even if that should occur, gooey oil and clogs are easily removed by soaking the nebulizer glass in rubbing alcohol.

How long should I run the diffuser?
As long as you want, nothing bad will happen to it, even if you run out of oil. The pump is designed to run 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. But, most aromatherapy treatments are administered for only 15 to 20 minutes at a time and then repeated 2 or 3 times per day.

Are nebulizers quiet?
In all honesty, nebulizers are the least quiet of all diffuser types. They are powered by an air pump that creates a steady hum during operation. Some people don't even hear this sound, others are annoyed by it, and the majority find the sound tolerable. But, remember, you only need to run a nebulizer for 15 or 20 minutes to saturate the room with the relaxing or therapeutic effects of the oil.
